Stock Market Update Wednesday April 15, 2026 Stocks extended their momentum, running hotter than the unseasonably warm Northeast weather. The S&P 500 climbed another 80 basis points, marking a fresh closing high less than three weeks after flirting with a near 10% drawdown. Leadership remained consistent at the sector level, with technology and consumer discretionary continuing to outperform. Within tech, however, a rotation is beginning to emerge. Software names (IGV) surged 4.4%, while semiconductors (SMH) lagged for most of the session before staging a late-day rebound into marginally positive territory. That divergence will be a key theme to monitor as earnings season approaches.

Score Board:

  • SPY: +0.79%

  • QQQ: +1.40%

  • IWM: +0.25%

Away From Stocks: Treasury curve bear steepened. The long bond yield rose to 4.89% from 4.87%, while the 2-year held steady at 4.76%. In commodities, WTI crude edged up to $91 per barrel. Gold retraced below $4,800, bitcoin pushed toward $75,000, and the VIX settled near 18.
