Presidential Update Tuesday January 28, 2025

Presidential Update Tuesday January 28, 2025 President Trump announced the formation of a Crypto Task Force, signaling a strategic move to address the growing influence of digital currencies on the economy and national security.

Meanwhile, the new administration has swiftly undertaken a series of executive actions aimed at setting the tone for its policy agenda. The confirmation of key cabinet members marks another step toward solidifying its governance framework.

Presidential Actions And Policy Shifts Shape The World January 27, 2025 In a series of significant executive actions, the President granted pardons to everyone involved in the January 6 Capitol attack, withdrew the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Climate Accord, eliminated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the federal government, and greatly increased drilling and mining rights on federal lands. One of the most controversial actions was the attempt to end birthright citizenship, which has faced legal challenges and raised concerns about its constitutionality under the Fourteenth Amendment.

State Attorneys General swiftly filed lawsuits against the birthright citizenship order, resulting in a temporary restraining order. This legal dispute is expected to escalate through the appellate courts, and many are anticipating a major ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court.

In terms of Senate support for key appointments, the President has received strong backing from the Republican-controlled Senate, which has already confirmed several crucial cabinet officials, including those for State, Defense, Homeland Security, and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent is likely to be confirmed early this week. However, confirmation for nominees like Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, Kash Patel as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services may be more contentious. A notable moment came when the Vice President cast a tie-breaking vote to confirm Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, reflecting the united front of Senate Republicans in supporting the administration's agenda.

On trade and tariff policies, the administration's activity was muted in its first week, but the President hinted at possible actions targeting Mexico, Canada, and China starting in February. More guidance on trade strategy is anticipated after Scott Bessent’s confirmation as Treasury Secretary, which will enable negotiations between governments.

A glimpse of the administration’s diplomatic strategy was observed when the President imposed a 25% tariff on all Colombian imports after Colombia refused a deportation flight for undocumented immigrants with criminal records. This prompted Colombia to change its position, leading to the immediate removal of the tariffs—illustrating the administration's willingness to leverage economic pressure in international relations.

House Republicans met at the Trump Doral Resort in Miami to discuss advancing the President's legislative priorities. Key topics included addressing two urgent fiscal issues: passing a Continuing Resolution to fund the government past the March 14 deadline and tackling the impending debt ceiling crisis, which is forecasted to peak around mid-June. A challenge arises from a faction of House Republicans, 38 members who previously opposed raising the debt ceiling, complicating efforts to build consensus. The retreat aimed to explore possibilities like a Republican-only reconciliation bill or reaching a bipartisan deal that could include disaster relief funding for California and initiatives favorable to Democrats in the 2025 Continuing Resolution.
