Stock Market Weekend Update Saturday August 16, 2025 After a week of mixed economic reports, it's still likely that the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) will lower interest rates in September. This week, the focus will be on the yearly Jackson Hole meeting of Federal Reserve officials. The meeting will end with a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday morning, where he might attempt to influence what people expect regarding future interest rate decisions. During his July press conference, Powell noted that the September meeting will benefit from having two months of additional data, as the August reports will be released before the FOMC's decision.
At the previous meeting, two committee members voted in favor of cutting rates at the next meeting.
