Stock Market Update Wednesday January 8, 2025 Equities mirrored this subdued tone, ending broadly unchanged after recent bouts of heightened volatility.

Away From Stocks: A robust long bond auction, clearing at 4.91%—slightly below the 4.92% When-Issued level—provided support to the Treasury market, allowing it to recover from early-session losses and close flat to marginally stronger. Meanwhile, WTI crude declined toward $73 per barrel, gold surged to a record $2,663 per ounce, bitcoin tumbled below the $94,000 mark, and the VIX slid beneath 18, signaling slightly reduced market anxiety.

Markets will see a partial pause in activity on Thursday, as the stock market will be closed for the National Day of Mourning honoring Former President Jimmy Carter. The bond market will operate on a shortened schedule, with trading ending at 2 PM ET.
