Stock Market Update Tuesday May 5, 2026 U.S. equities staged a broad-based rebound, with the S&P 500 advancing 0.8%, fully retracing Monday’s drawdown and pushing year-to-date performance to +6.4%. The move reflects continued risk-on sentiment and resilient market breadth. At the sector level, leadership remained concentrated in semiconductors and memory/storage, where momentum continues to build despite consolidation in bellwethers such as NVIDIA. Industrials also contributed positively, reinforcing the cyclical bid. Notably, small-cap equities outperformed, with the Russell 2000 climbing 1.75%, aided by a modest decline in yields that eased financial conditions at the margin.
Away From Stocks: Treasury market experienced a bull flattening, as long-duration yields declined more than the front end. The 10-year benchmark fell four basis points to 4.98%, while the 2-year yield edged down to 3.93% from 3.95% previously, signaling incremental demand for duration. WTI crude oil retraced to $103 per barrel, while gold posted a modest rebound to $4,556 per ounce, suggesting a degree of safe-haven demand. In digital assets, Bitcoin extended its advance toward $82,000, reflecting continued speculative interest.
Meanwhile, volatility remained contained, with the VIX settling just above 17, indicating relatively stable risk expectations.
