Stock Market Update Tuesday August 19, 2025 Equities: U.S. stocks traded lower, with the S&P 500 sliding 0.6%, as selling pressure intensified in high-beta momentum names—the leadership cohort that had been propelling the rally. Their broad, synchronized pullback marked a notable shift in market tone. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 1.4%, while small-caps, measured by the Russell 2000, fell 0.8%.

Away From Stocks: The Treasury curve underwent a bull flattening, led by the long end. The 30-year yield declined 4 bps to 4.90%, while the 2-year edged lower to 3.75% from 3.77% at Monday’s close. Commodities & Alternatives: Energy markets softened, with WTI crude dipping back below $62/barrel. Precious metals lost ground as gold retreated to $3,316/oz, while bitcoin slipped under $113,000. Volatility edged higher, with the VIX advancing toward 16, reflecting growing demand for downside protection.
