Stock Market Update Tuesday April 7, 2026 A volatile session saw equities trade lower for most of the day while oil prices pushed higher, before sentiment shifted into the close. Markets stabilized on reports that Pakistan may request a delay to threatened U.S. escalation as negotiations continue, prompting a late risk rebound. The S&P 500 fell more than 1% at its intraday lows before recovering into the close. Selling pressure was broadly distributed across sectors, with energy the primary area of relative strength. Both consumer staples and consumer discretionary lagged, a notable dynamic as the two sectors have been moving in tandem in recent sessions. The correlation reflects growing concern that sustained higher oil prices are beginning to weigh more meaningfully on the consumer outlook. As risk appetite improved late in the day, flows once again favored large-cap technology, reinforcing its role as the market’s preferred liquidity and momentum trade during rebounds.
