Stock Market Update Tuesday April 21, 2026 Stocks faced renewed selling pressure, closing near intraday lows as the S&P 500 declined 0.6%, trimming year-to-date returns to 3.5%. On a sector basis, energy and technology outperformed on a relative basis, while the majority of groups ended lower. Within mega-cap tech, the Mag 7 delivered mixed performance, with Microsoft leading the upside. The IGV ETF posted another strong advance as software shares continued to rebound from what has been a notably sharp drawdown year-to-date. In after-hours trading, Capital One fell roughly 4%, United Airlines declined 2%, and Interactive Brokers slipped 2% following earnings releases.
Away From Stocks: Treasuries came under pressure in a bear-flattening move, with the 2-year yield rising 6 basis points to 3.78%, while the 30-year yield edged up to 4.89% from 4.88% on Monday. In commodities, WTI crude advanced to $90 per barrel, gold pulled back to $4,711 per ounce, and bitcoin held steady near $76,000. Meanwhile, the VIX closed just below the 20 level.
