Stock Market Update Thursday October 2, 2025 Stocks experienced mixed trading today. Major indexes initially reached new intraday highs but then declined by roughly 0.5%. However, they recovered by the end of the day, achieving new all-time closing highs. The technology sector and small-cap stocks led the gains, while energy and consumer staples stocks underperformed.
Score Board: S&P 500 +0.1%, Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) +0.4%, Russell 2000 (IWM) +0.7%.
Away From Stocks: Treasurys saw the curve flatten modestly as the 30-year yield slipped three basis points to 4.69%. In commodities, WTI crude broke below $61/barrel and gold eased back to $3,857/oz. Bitcoin surged through the $120,000 mark, while the VIX drifted higher toward 17.
Macro News: Friday October 3, 2025: Non-farm Payrolls (8:30 AM ET): delayed until the government shutdown ends.
S&P Global Services PMI (9:45 AM ET): Final reading, expected 53.9 (expansion).
ISM Services PMI (10:00 AM ET): Forecast 51.8 (moderate growth).
