Stock Market Update Thursday May 14, 2026 Equities extended their momentum-driven advance, with the S&P 500 climbing 0.8% and decisively breaking above the 7,500 threshold — just two weeks after recording its first close north of 7,200. The rapid appreciation underscores persistent risk-on sentiment, continued mega-cap leadership, and resilient investor appetite despite elevated valuations and macro uncertainty.

Away From Stocks: The Treasury yield curve flattened slightly as long-term yields rose. The 30-year Treasury yield went above 5.02% due to concerns about persistent inflation and government bond supply. The 2-year note remained steady near 4.00%, indicating market caution about when and how much the Federal Reserve will cut rates. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil increased to $102 a barrel, driven by expectations of tighter supply and geopolitical risks. Precious metals declined, with gold falling to around $4,650 an ounce as higher real yields and stronger stock markets decreased the need for safe-haven assets. Bitcoin stabilized near $81,000, influenced by mixed institutional investment and the absence of new economic factors. Market volatility continued to decrease, with the VIX index moving towards 17, highlighting low hedging activity and positive investor sentiment.
