Stock Market Update Thursday April 2, 2026 Stocks drifted into a pre-holiday holding pattern following this morning’s sharp rebound from an early 1.5% drawdown, with the S&P 500 finishing roughly unchanged and preserving a 3.3% advance for the shortened trading week. Sector performance was mixed beneath the surface. Technology continued to attract the strongest bid during this week’s rallies, while a renewed move higher in crude prices curtailed the recent bounce in Consumer Discretionary, leaving it among the session’s laggards.

Away From Stocks: Treasury yields eased two to three basis points across the curve, reflecting modest demand for duration. Commodities saw notable strength, with WTI crude surging more than 10% toward $112 per barrel. Precious metals softened as gold retraced to $4,668 per ounce, bitcoin slipped back below $67,000, and equity volatility continued to compress, with the VIX falling under 24, down nearly eight points over the past three sessions.
