Stock Market Update Thursday April 17, 2025 Equities drifted through a lackluster trading session, with the S&P 500 inching marginally higher to cap a holiday-shortened week marked by a 1.5% decline.
Away From Stocks: U.S. Treasurys gave back much of Wednesday’s gains, as the yield curve steepened modestly—2-year and 30-year yields climbed to 3.81% and 4.80%, respectively, rising 4 and 6 basis points on the day. In commodities, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude extended its recent upward trajectory, approaching $64 per barrel amid sustained bullish sentiment. Gold edged down slightly but held firm near elevated levels at $3,315 per ounce, signaling continued investor interest in safe-haven assets. Meanwhile, Bitcoin advanced toward the $85,000 threshold, reflecting ongoing risk appetite in digital assets, and the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) eased below the 30 mark, suggesting a tempered outlook for near-term market volatility.
