Stock Market Update Monday May 4, 2026 Equities pulled back modestly, with the S&P 500 declining 0.4% after recently printing new highs. Sector performance was mixed: energy outperformed on firmer crude prices, while cyclicals lagged, with industrials, materials, and consumer discretionary all closing lower. Technology was broadly flat to slightly positive, with no outsized moves among the mega-cap cohort often referred to as the “Mag 7.” Small caps underperformed amid upward pressure on yields, though the drawdown in the iShares Russell 2000 ETF remained contained. In after-hours trading, Palantir Technologies was little changed despite an earnings beat, while Pinterest surged 17% on strong results.

Away From Stocks: Treasurys retraced a portion of earlier losses into the close, leaving the 2-year and 30-year yields at 3.95% and 5.02%, respectively. In commodities, WTI crude oil settled near $105 per barrel, while gold remained under pressure at $4,513 per ounce. In digital assets, Bitcoin edged below $80,000. Volatility picked up, with the CBOE Volatility Index rebounding above 18.
