Stock Market Update Friday April 17, 2026 The frenzied melt-up in equities remains firmly intact, with Friday’s 1.2% advance in the S&P 500 pushing the index to a 4% year-to-date gain, a sharp reversal from the 7% decline recorded on March 30. The speed and magnitude of the rebound continue to underscore strong risk appetite and aggressive dip-buying across the market. From a sector perspective, leadership remained consistent with recent sessions. Technology, consumer discretionary, and industrials outperformed, extending their momentum-driven leadership. Energy stocks, however, came under pressure as crude oil prices sold off sharply.

Away From Stocks: Treasurys attracted renewed demand, with yields moving lower across the curve. The 2-year Treasury yield declined seven basis points to 3.71%, while the 30-year yield fell five basis points to 4.88%, signaling a modest risk-on rotation paired with expectations for softer growth or easing inflation pressures. WTI crude plunged 9% to $83 per barrel, weighing on energy equities. Gold climbed more than 1% to $4,851 per ounce, maintaining its defensive bid and reflecting continued demand for hard assets. Bitcoin advanced to $77,500, extending strength in digital risk assets, while the VIX closed just above 17, suggesting volatility expectations remain relatively contained despite the market’s rapid ascent.
